I knew I was getting myself into something special before I even started this thing. Three pelicans become a lot to feed when they reach maturity, so his father insists on releasing them. Paul Gerard Kennedy, I saw this film just after I left school in 1981. Storm Boy tells the story of a 10-year-old boy, called Mick by his father Tom, and Storm Boy by the Aboriginal loner Fingerbone he befriends.
Much of the filming in beach-side Goolwa, South Australia was shot in inaccessible areas. Lovely Australian film. The original 1976 Storm Boy is gentle, simple, sweet and exceedingly beautiful to look at.
Because of that, its presentation on Criterion channel - in a washed out full-frame transfer - is kind of perfect. This FAQ is empty.  Three pelicans played the lead pelican. Two are never seen again, but one, Mr Percival, keeps coming back. and the ending of this plays a LOT better than the corn-pone similar version of, say, OLD YELLER.
Plenty of nostalgia. There were a few times where I feared the film would lose its way and pad out the length of what should be a short film, but the last 30 minutes really moved me and made me feel like I learned something about life.

), this is a sad, wise, quiet film that's excellently cast--Greg Rowe, the lead, is terrific as one of those lonely awkward kids who finds it easier to deal with the sky and the sea and the birds than people, and David Gulpilil is terrific as per usual, but the film also has some genuinely terrific PELICAN WRANGLING, (this is a film from the 70s, no computer tricks or anything) allowing MR PERCIVAL to really establish his presence in the film (I wasn't familiar with Pelican squawks before the film-they sort of sound like digeridoos?)
